Domestic Violence Batterer’s Program
Who is it for?
The DVB Program is offered in both group
and individual sessions. Clients who enter this program,
both male and female, are generally court ordered individuals
sent by the Spartanburg County Magistrate, Municipal, or
Family Courts who have been charged with Criminal Domestic
Violence and must attend treatment as part of their sentencing.
Other individuals are referred by Pre-Trial Intervention,
Probation and Parole, and the Department of Social Services.
Less than 1% of individuals entering this program are self-referred.
Requirements
Program participants must attend 26 weeks of group or
individual therapy to successfully complete the program.
The majority of clients are seen in weekly group sessions.
Individual treatment is also available to clients who have
special needs, i.e. interpreter services for Spanish speaking
clients, ASL interpreters for the deaf population, or individuals
who are assessed to be low functioning. The psycho-educational
therapy program has a structured attendance policy that
must be followed or the batterer is reported for non-compliance.
The cost of the program is determined by the referral
source.
Additional Information
Program participants are required to identify their victim
at the onset of treatment. This information is used to notify
the victim of the batterer's participation and
on-going compliance with the program attendance and the
availability of free individual sessions
for themselves and/or their families. The victim is also
notified immediately if the batterer fails to comply with
the program rules and is discharged from the program. Victims
and families who attend counseling are assessed for risk
of further violence and informed of the availability of
SAFE Homes/Rape Crisis Coalition's Shelter and other support
Services in the community.
